REVIEWS
%Title: ANGRY THOREAUAN Issue 7 Oct. '93
%Descr: *MRR* called it "a So Cal *Fact Sheet Five*." [sic]
There's about 20 pages of reviews and two pages of complaints
about reviews. Some people are glad to be reviewed in *F5* but
not the ol' Rev.
I liked how he gets around bulk mail laws by including everyone's
personal letters in every issue.

%Title: BABY SUE MUSIC REVIEW Issue 15 Winter '94
%Descr: A music review zine from the same funny people that bring us
*Baby Sue.* Well-written and readable. With more then just
a few lines, he goes into detail with each of the reviews.
They really liked Smashing Pumpkins (but then again who doesn').
45 reviews total.
Look for their full-sized format soon.

reviewing signifigant published works dealing with mail art
and networking culture. In addition to the reviews he also
prints short articles on networking.
A new book was just released in france called *Timbres
d'Artistes* that documents artist stamps. John gives us his
impressions in this issue.
He's working on a new book and looking for articles on networking
culture.

%Title: CROW QUARTERLY REVIEW: A New Review of Unpublished Manuscrips
Volume
%Descr: 2 Issue 2 Summer '93
An exciting new idea for struggling new writers. Writers
send unpublished manuscrips for examination. The editors
will critique it and if they like it they'll print a
detailed review in *Crow*. The review fee is high (about
$200) but the exposure could be invaluable.
Since the reviews are professionally written they're descriptive
and concice but only about 10 new works are featured here. They
also printed some very valuable advice about writing children's
books and how to work with agents.
Editors, agents, and producers can sign up for free
subscriptions.

%Title: DUMAR'S REVIEWS Issue 20 Fall 1993
%Descr: Denise reviews all types of media relating to sf, horror,
occult, poetry and other popular culture. Sci-fi oriented
zine reviews with a phantasm twist. Also movie reviews from
mainstream to obscure, and TV show, restaurant, book and
poetry reviews. A major part of this zine is devoted to
various cons in different cities, and there's a right-on
rant about women being excluded from the horror & sci-fi
genres unless they are sluts or bimbos. The usual old boys
network shit & the difficulty of breaking into the biz. Go
girl go!
This is the last issue. (I liked the photos of Denise's buddies,
and her poetry chapbooks are also great--MIR.)

%Title: IMPRESS YOUR FRIENDS
%Descr: A really fine mini comix review sheet that reproduces a
panel of work in addition to listing the address and review
the book. Since it's from Quebec many of the books are in
Canadian and some are only in French. Don't let that phase
you, it's still an excellent rescource.
16 titles reviewed here, many of which I never even heard of.
There's even a page of international resources.
If you're totally into self-published comics this is a must-have

%Title: LAUGHING BEAR NEWSLETTER Issue 61 Sept. '93
%Descr: A continuing guide on how to publish a zine or chapbooks.
Self-promotion, reviews, resources, distribution, and
announcements. Particularly useful for those interested in
literary chapbooks.
This issue is shorter on pages but not on information. We get the
straight dirt on buying clip art and using a hand held scanner to
produce your own. They also review the wonderful series of
traditional designed books from Turtle Point Press.
They also distribute a free (#10 SASE) pamplet covering some of
the basics in small press self-publishing.

%Title: LINEAR A December '92
%Descr: A British poetry review journal with an overview of poetry
chapbooks from around the world. The reviews are a bit long
(running about two pages) but there's only about 12
publications reviewed here.
I know this is an old issue but the editor promissed us a new
issue by now.

%Title: MSRRT NEWSLETTER: Social Responsibilites Round Table Volume 6
Issue
%Descr: 9 Nov. '93
A valuable resource guide for those interested in
alternative media. More then half of it cosists entirely of
zine reviews (mostly literary and political), some local
events, also book, video, and catalog reviews.
There's a report from the October MLA conference, the current
state of free speach, and reviews of some important new
publications.

%Title: NEW PHILISTINE MAGAZINE Issue 19 Winter, 1994
%Descr: Angry reviews of the latest trash that passes itself off as
literature.
The best part about this issue is the great satire of a Generic
Zine _Mad Rag_ containing a stupid interview with a stupid band
("Mad Rag: I played your album. Sponge: Oh. Cool."), a
Madonna concert review, typical letters, a parody of the "Where
will they be in ten years?" article, a fake Thom Metzger rant,
and a not-so-fake PC editorial. Plus a totally right-on Pro and
Con rant about Factsheet Five. Yow! Plus the usual angry
reviews.

%Title: OBSCURE PUBLICATIONS Issue 24
%Descr: I've been reading Jim's zine for several years now, and I
still read cover-to-cover as soon as it arrives. I found it
just as valuable when I was a zine reader as I do now as
*Factsheet Five's* publisher. He explores issues of concern
to other small press publishers as well as everyone else.
The results are in. Read all the predictions for the future of
zinedom. Unfortunately only six people responed including Mike
*(Boiled Angel)* Diana, Uncle *(Yellow Submarine)* Junky, and
myself. The funniest quotes by far were from Uncle Junky. What
will be the most popular zine in 10 years? UJ: "Chicken Fucking."
What will F5 be like? UJ: "Seed Catalog." What about Full-Force
Frank? UJ: "Instructor for CIA." To find out what he says about
me you'll have to get this issue. Jim finally got a new letter
from Full-Force Frank. It's a long one and it's printed here too.

%Title: SMALL MAGAZINE REVIEW Volume 1 Issue 5 Oct. '93
%Descr: Dustbooks has been documenting the small press for many
years now and they're finally covering
magazines/journals/zines as well as books. They primarily
focus on reviewing poetry journals (like *Dusty Dog* or
*Taproots*) but with extensive reviews and additional essays
for a complete package. I really liked the news column too.
Joan Peternel wrote about the use of artwork in poetry magazines,
Merritt Clifton told us of her history in the small press, Bob
Grumman reviewed *Lost & Found Times*, and Laurel Speer responded
to Albert Huffstickler's rant about litmags not taking multiple
submissions.
*SMR* is a lively way to keep up with the uncountable number of
poetry magazines in this country.

%Title: SMALL PRESS REVIEW Volume 25 Issue 10 Oct. '93
%Descr: The long running literary magazine devoted to small press
freelance writers and publishers. Different then *F5* with a
focus on poetry chapbooks, book publishing, professional
freelancers, and people that actually *get paid* for their
writing. Most of the magazine is reviews of new
publications but there's alwasy a bunch of interesting
essays.
Lots of news about upcomming literary competitions and many
reviews in this one.
A good resource for people starting out in the freelance writing
business.

%Title: TAPROOT REVIEWS Issue 3 Fall '93
%Descr: This is Luigi-Bob's extensive listing of zines, literary
journals, and poetry chapbooks. Much of this issue has been
excerpted in the Factsheet Five Poetry section. This isn't
to say that if you have a copy of F5 then you don't need
*Taproots*. Quite the contrary, in addition to the reviews
there's also excerpts from zines, poetry fragments, essays,
and the complete chapbook review section.
Luigi wrote a long review of visual poetry (and printed two
samples), John Byrum critiqued Geof Hugh's dbqp series, Thomas
Wiloch explored the dada poetry of Hugo Ball (the man resposible
for Talking Heads I Zimbra), and Dick Higgins reviewed Robert
Peters.
If you're totally into poetry it's a must-have.

%Title: THE COMICS JOURNAL Issue 163 Nov. '93
%Descr: The premier industry journal for the comics industry.
Interviews with all the major artists that practically go on
forever, notoriously critical reviews of comic books big and
small, and great portfolios from a variety of artists.
It looks like comic shops will join the long list of companies
that are changing from independents stores to national chains.
Read about the three companies trying to do just that. I really
ejoyed the review of *Comic Power*, the comic art show recently
held at New York's Exit Art gallery. Interviews with the people
behind DC's Vertigo imprint, artist Ted McKeever, Terry
*Unsupervised Existance* LaBan, and Neil *Sandman* Gaiman,

%Title: THE MOUTH OF XIBALBA: The Zine about Zines Issue 2
%Descr: It looks like Neil has changes the look and the focus of his
zine. It's now a zine review zine that
borrows/excerpts/reprints huge samples from other zines. Not
too cluttered, he only looks at a few zines each time. I
like the fact that he just xeroxes whole pages out of each
book so you get a real feel for each title.
He's got good taste, these are definitely some of my favorites:
*Farm Pulp, Dreadful Pleasures, The Church of Hemp, King Cat
Comics, For Dickheads Only, Dyslexic,* and *Lumpy Head*.
Recommended to those newcommers looking to expand their zine
horizons.

%Title: THE TELLURIAN Issue 2 Sept. '93
%Descr: Yet another publcation from those busy guys at Blackberry
House. There must be some record for the most number of
zines produced by two people.
The first issue of *The Tellurian* was done by John as a gift to
himself on his 30th birthday. He decided to put out a second
issue of his comic review fanzine and I'm glad he did. Wonderful
short essays about movie colorazation, the golden age of comics,
the comics of Jim Shooter, and nine pages of comic reviews.

%Title: THE WEB: Celebrating Children's Literature Volume 3 Issue 3
Fall
%Descr: '93
A zine for adult who enjoy reading children's book. The
reviews are written for adults and are based on enjoyment
value.
Now that Fall is back again Wendy devoted this issue to school
stories. It's almost entirely reviews (about 25 books here) but
the joy the reviews has for the books most definetely comes
through in the reviews.

%Title: ZYX Issue 6
%Descr: In-depth reviews of more academically oriented books and
small-press journals. Intellegently written but hard to read
due to its tiny 6 point type.
In this issue he reviewed Mike Gunderloy's *The World of Zines*,
a book by Jack Saunders, Bob Z.'s *Land of Debris,* an old book
by Geof Huth, one of Richard Kostelanetz's experimental works,
and many more.
Recomended to small-press afficianados and academic zinesters.

%Title: ZINES! Spring 1993
%Descr:
A stapled-in-the-corner newsletter of zine-reviews. In this
issue, editor/publisher Christopher B. Martin covers some twenty
zines of all kinds. At least three-quarters of these I'd never
heard of--so ZINES! should raise the zine-consciusness of almost
anyone. Martin also provides useful dope about the computer
software and hardware he uses to produce his zine.
